This is an equatorial, warm-water stretch of coast, and the handful of setups scattered between Port-Gentil and the smaller towns to the south give it a low-key, exploratory feel.
The swell window is refreshingly simple. Breaks come alive on south, south-southwest, and southwest swell, so anything tracking up out of the South Atlantic tends to reach this coast. Sizes stay approachable, generally holding from around 0.3 m up to 1.8 m, with a couple of the more exposed setups handling up to 2.4 m when there is real push behind the swell. That range keeps most days in the fun, rideable band rather than anything heavy.
Wind is the main variable to read. The beach breaks favour a southeast wind, while the points tend to prefer northeast, so a quick look at the morning conditions usually tells you which type of break is worth the drive. Tides are forgiving here: most spots work through low, mid, and high water, so timing matters less than lining up the right swell and wind together.
Spots cluster mainly around Erogoue, which holds several breaks, with a few more spread across Iguela, Ikeoue, and Port-Gentil itself. Notable spots include Cap Lopez, Ferme aux Cochons, and Olendé, a mix of sand-bottom beaches and longer point setups. The points lean intermediate, rewarding surfers who are comfortable reading a wave down the line, while the beaches are more forgiving and include a beginner-friendly option for anyone still finding their feet.
For most visitors the plan is straightforward: wait for a south or southwest swell in that approachable size range, then pick a beach break when the wind sits southeast or a point when it swings northeast. Do that along this warm-water coastline and you have a strong chance of scoring waves in a corner of West Africa that still feels genuinely off the beaten path.
