Aceh sits at the northern tip of Sumatra, where a coastline of coral reefs and scattered island setups faces open Indian Ocean swell, making it one of Indonesia's most reef-heavy surf zones. Most waves here break over reef, so the region rewards surfers comfortable reading a coral lineup, with the majority of setups suited to intermediates and a handful reserved for experts. Beginners have fewer choices, though a sand-bottomed beach break gives less experienced surfers somewhere to ease in.
The swell window is broad but consistent in direction: waves arrive predominantly from the south through the west, with the southwest quadrant doing most of the work. That orientation means the groundswells that light up the rest of Sumatra also reach Aceh's reefs, and the spots pick up energy from as little as waist-high on the smaller reefs up to well overhead on the bigger, more exposed setups. Offshore conditions tend to come from the east, with northeasterly and northwesterly winds grooming certain corners depending on how each spot faces. Tides are forgiving here, with spots working through high and mid tide and many holding up at low as well, so timing a session comes down to swell and wind more than chasing a narrow tidal window.
The reefs cluster around a few small towns and islands. Pulo Batal holds the highest concentration of setups, Holoban adds a couple more, and spots around Ballasetas, Blangujung, and Deahbaruh round out the spread. Bottoms range from live and dead coral to sand and uneven reef, so what sits underfoot changes from spot to spot even within a short stretch of coast. A few river mouths break over sand and add variety to the mostly-reef lineup, and there is a point setup for those who go looking.
Among the surf spots in Aceh, notable reefs include Gunturs, Cobras, and Pulau Babi, while general options like A-Frame, Babah Nipah, and Blangujung Rights help orient a first trip. There is no single best wave in the region; the right call depends on the day's swell size and wind direction, and part of the appeal is moving between setups as conditions shift. For most visitors Aceh works best as an intermediate-and-up destination where reef know-how and a bit of exploration pay off, with the cleanest windows arriving when a solid southwest swell meets light easterly wind.
