Wind tends to work best from the southeast, which grooms the more exposed setups. Tides are forgiving here: the local spots run across low, mid, and high water, so timing the tide is less of a barrier than finding the right swell window.
For surfing in Bengkulu, most of the lineups suit confident intermediates, with reef bottoms of live and dead coral rewarding surfers who read a break well. There is also one beginner-friendly beach break over sand for those still finding their feet. Notable spots include Pantai Panjang, the long city beach right in Bengkulu town, and the reefs out around Enggano Island, a remote outpost off the coast that sits wide open to Indian Ocean energy.
The main surf zones cluster around Bengkulu town, with further options near Barhau and Kabuwe. Enggano in particular rewards those willing to travel, trading easy access for reef and point waves that face straight into open-ocean swell. With its mix of reef, beach, and point breaks, Bengkulu gives intermediate surfers a varied coastline to work through once the swell lines up, plus a gentler beach option for beginners still building their sessions.
