Maale is the surf zone around the Maldivian capital, where a handful of reef and beach breaks pick up swell arriving from the south and southeast. Surfing in Maale centers on three breaks clustered near Malé itself, so this is a compact, easy-to-orient stretch of coastline rather than a sprawling coast to explore.
The setup is dominated by south, south-southeast, and southeast swell, the classic Maldivian window when groundswell wraps up out of the Indian Ocean during the main season. Most of the breaks face this direction and hold size from waist-high on the small days up to head-high and a touch overhead when it fills in, roughly one to six feet, with one spot able to take a bit more. This is intermediate territory across the board. The waves break over coral, so a confident paddle-out and comfort in shallow reef conditions matter more than raw power.
Wind is the other half of the equation. The breaks generally want a northwest wind, with one leaning more westerly, so clean early sessions before the sea breeze fills in tend to reward the dawn patrol. Tide is forgiving, with most spots working through low and mid and one holding into the high.
Two of the three breaks are coral reefs, one over dead coral and one over living coral, while the third is a beach break over uneven reef, adding a little variety in feel without straying from the same swell and wind pattern. Notable spots include Malé, and the wider zone takes in breaks such as Furana and Kadu. For visitors, the appeal is the concentration: the breaks sit close together, read easily once the south swell is running, and are best surfed with reef-ready fundamentals rather than as a first-ever lineup.
