Surfing in Morocco centers on a long Atlantic coastline that faces open ocean swell, giving the country a broad spread of breaks from the northern strait down through the desert south. Nine coastal regions hold the surf, and the mix leans toward sand-bottomed beach breaks with a strong scatter of points and the occasional reef, so you can find everything from forgiving peaks to long, wrapping walls.
Most of the coast is oriented to pick up northwest and west swell, with west-northwest, north-northwest and north also common, which is why the Atlantic groundswells that arrive through autumn and winter tend to be the ones that light the coast up. Easterly and southeasterly winds groom many of these spots offshore, and while a lot of breaks hold through low and high water, mid tide is the most reliable window across the country. Waves often come alive on modest swell and stay manageable much of the time, with the more exposed points picking up the bigger days.
In the central heartland around Souss-Massa, points define the character, with breaks like Anchor Point at Tiguemmi n'Ait Bihi, Boilers at Asqaylf and Killer Point at Azazoul drawing surfers to the region. Further north, Marrakesh-Safi mixes points and beaches near the port town of Asfi, home to Safi and The Money Wave, along with Cap Sim at Douar Ouassane. The Casablanca-Settat coast is more beach-driven and sits close to the city, with Bouznika Plage at Sidi el Haj Bou Derbala, Dar Bouazza and Oued Cherrat at Lqasba.
The northern and Rabat regions add more variety. Around Rabat-Salé-Kénitra you'll find Doura at Rabat and the lagoon-side Moulay Bousselham. Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima reaches up toward the strait with Briech at Oulad Ben Ai, Cap Spartel at Tangier and Larache. South of the main cluster, Guelmim-Oued Noun offers points and beaches such as Boats Point at Ahel Fregat, Legzira at Sidi Borja and Mirleft. Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra stretches into sand-heavy beaches like Boujdour at Cabo Bojador, Al Marsa at Laayoune and Casamar at Tarfaya.
Far to the south, and geographically separate from the rest of the coast, the Oued Ed-Dahab region around Dakhla forms its own pocket, with points and beaches like Foum Labouir, Pointe de l'Or and Lagtoua at Itmlily. Treat it as its own trip rather than part of a single continuous coastline.
The surf suits intermediates best, with a handful of beginner-friendly beaches and a few expert-only points for those chasing size. A standard shortboard covers most days, though the range of points and beaches leaves room for everything from a fish to a longboard. As always, compare swell, wind, tide and season against each spot's layout before you commit to a session.
