Surfing in Mozambique unfolds along the warm Indian Ocean coast, where a small but rewarding collection of breaks is concentrated in the Inhambane region. Most of the surf sits near the town of Praia do Tofo, with spots such as Back Beach, Praia Tofo, and Quissico giving the area its character. Beach breaks are the most common setup, backed by a handful of reefs and the occasional point, so the bottom ranges from sand to dead coral depending on where you paddle out.
The coastline faces east, and swell arriving from the east through the northeast and southeast powers most sessions, with southerly pulses adding to the mix at several spots. Winds most often blow from the southwest, with northwest and west patterns showing up locally, so it pays to match your spot to the day's wind. Many breaks work through most of the tide, though mid tide is the most reliable window across the region.
Waves tend to fill in around 0.6 m (2 ft) and hold up to roughly 1.8 m (6 ft) at many spots, a range that suits a wide span of surfers. Half the breaks are approachable for beginners, while the reefs and points offer steeper, more advanced rides. As always, compare swell, wind, tide, season, and each spot's character before deciding where to paddle out.
