Surfing in Phang Nga

Phang Nga sits on Thailand's Andaman coast, a west-facing stretch of sand where mellow, beginner-friendly point surf appears when southwest monsoon energy reaches the shore. This is a small, laid-back corner of the country's surf map, better known for limestone bays and long open beaches than for heavy waves, and that easygoing character carries straight into the water.

Surfing in Phang Nga centers on gentle point breaks over a sand bottom, the kind of setup that suits people learning to read a lineup rather than chasing size. The waves work through a broad swell window, catching energy from the south around to the west, which fits the Andaman Sea's exposure during the wet season. Conditions clean up when a northeast wind holds the faces smooth, and the sandy points stay rideable across most of the tide, so timing is forgiving.

Expect a modest size range. Waves start working around waist high and top out near head high, keeping things approachable and low-consequence for most of the season. That makes this a comfortable region to log hours, work on pop-ups, and get used to catching unbroken waves without much crowd pressure.

Notable spots include Cape Pakarang, near the village of Ban Pramong, which anchors the local scene and gives visiting surfers an obvious place to start. From there it is easy to picture the wider coastline: long beaches broken up by headlands and river mouths, with the surf switching on when a distant monsoon system pushes swell up the coast.

As with most of Thailand's west coast, the season matters more than any single break. The Andaman side comes alive roughly from May through October, when the southwest monsoon delivers the wind and swell that make these points worth checking. Outside that window the sea often lies flat, so plan your visit around the wet months and treat clean, waist-to-head-high days as the reward.
