The coastline here faces roughly north, so it wants groundswell tracking down from the north through the northeast, with some spots also catching east and the odd northwest angle. When those swells line up with a southerly wind blowing offshore, the beaches clean up nicely.
Most of the surf spots in Moray are gentle, sand-bottomed beach breaks, which makes the region approachable for beginners and improving intermediates alike, with one uneven reef adding a little variety. Waves tend to run small to medium, often in the one-to-four-foot range, though a more exposed corner can hold size up to around eight feet on a bigger day. That range suits a wide quiver, from longboards and funboards on the smaller days to a fish or shortboard when there's more push, and mellow sessions work just as well for SUP or bodyboard.
Tide is forgiving across the area, with waves on offer through low, mid, and high water, so timing is more about swell and wind than chasing a narrow window. Autumn and winter are the standout seasons, when North Sea lows send more consistent swell toward this coast, with cold water and short daylight as the trade-off.
For orientation, the surf strings along a series of small coastal towns. Lossiemouth is the best-known hub, with beach options on either side of the town, while Hopeman sits to the west and Cullen further east along the firth, and Portgordon rounds out the mix. Notable spots include Cullen, Hopeman Harbour, and Lossiemouth, giving you a handful of beaches to move between as the wind and swell shift. It is a workmanlike corner of Scottish surfing, best rewarded by watching the forecast for that north-to-east swell paired with a light southerly.
