Surfing in North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire's surf runs along an east-facing stretch of the North Sea coast, catching swell from the north through the southeast and firing best when a southwesterly wind blows offshore. Most of the action clusters around a handful of towns, with Cayton the busiest, alongside breaks near Lythe, Scalby, Barnby and Filey.

The coastline leans heavily on beach breaks over sand, which make up most of the setups here, backed by a scattering of reefs and a couple of points working over rock ledge. That mix gives the region genuine range: mellow sandy peaks for lower-tide sessions and sharper reef and point waves that reward more experienced surfers when the swell has size. Cayton Bay is the natural focal point, with Bunkers, Point and Pumphouse among the breaks worth knowing.

Swell direction is the first thing to check. Nearly every break here wants some north in the swell, and many also fire on easterly and southeasterly pushes, so northern to southeastern windows are the ones to watch. Wind matters just as much: a southwest offshore cleans up the majority of spots, with a few also holding into a straight west. Because this is a North Sea coast rather than an open-ocean one, the good days tend to line up with autumn and winter, when stronger systems track across and push more consistent swell onto the beaches.

Tides are forgiving across the region. Most spots have a mid-tide window, and plenty also work on the push toward high or back down to low, so you can usually find something rideable through much of the cycle. Size needs are modest, with many breaks coming to life around two feet and the beach breaks holding cleanly up to head-high and a bit more, while a few of the reefs and points can handle considerably larger swell for those chasing it.

There is something here for most surfers. Beginner-friendly waves sit mainly on the sand-bottom beaches, intermediates have the widest choice, and a smaller set of expert-level reef and point waves rounds out the top end. Board choice reflects that spread, with fish, longboards, shortboards and funboards all earning their place depending on the day. If you are new to surfing in North Yorkshire, the sandy beach breaks around Cayton are the sensible place to start before working out toward the reefs and points.
