Rocha is Uruguay's premier surf coast, a stretch of open Atlantic beachbreaks and scattered reefs along the country's southeastern shoreline that catches swell from the east through the south. This is where most travelling surfers head when they come to Uruguay, drawn by sandy points, exposed beaches, and a laid-back string of coastal towns rather than a single marquee wave.
The coastline breaks down into a handful of distinct hubs. Barra de Valizas holds the widest spread of options and is a good base if you want variety within a short drive. Punta del Diablo is the best-known town, a former fishing village turned summer hotspot with several nearby breaks. San Antonio, Aguas Dulces, and La Paloma round out the mix, each offering a few peaks and a different feel from sleepy to more developed. Spots like Bajos Del Polonio, Barra de Valizas, and Brisas del Polonio give a sense of the raw, dune-backed character that defines much of this coast.
Most waves here are beachbreaks over sand, which makes the region approachable and forgiving, with a smaller number of reef setups and one point break for those chasing longer, more organised walls. The reefs tend to suit intermediate surfers, while several of the sandy beaches are gentle enough for beginners finding their feet. The forecast picture is fairly consistent. The best swells arrive from the eastern to southern quadrant, so anything with an easterly or southerly component tends to switch the coast on. Offshore conditions come mainly on a west wind, with a northwesterly also grooming some spots, so a light wind out of the west is what you want to see when you check the forecast. Tides are flexible across much of the region, with waves working through low, mid, and high, meaning you rarely have to time a session too precisely.
Size-wise, many spots start showing at knee-to-waist-high pushes and hold comfortably into head-high-plus and bigger swells, so there is scope for both easy longboard days and more powerful sessions when a solid system lines up. As a rule, the exposed beaches soak up bigger swell better, while the reefs come into their own on cleaner, mid-range days.
For a first trip, Punta del Diablo and Barra de Valizas make natural starting points thanks to their spread of options and easy access to accommodation. Beginners should look toward the mellower beach peaks and La Viuda, while intermediates will get the most out of the reefs on a clean west wind. Rocha rewards a bit of exploration, so it pays to move between towns and let the wind and swell direction point you to the sheltered corner working best on the day.
