Indicators (Raglan) Surf Forecast Gids
Overview
Indicators (Raglan) is the longest, fastest and most critical of Raglan’s three points. It’s an excellent left-hand point breaking over boulders, with a serious, hollow character.
On smaller days it can split into two or three sections. Outside Indicators has a heavy take-off into a throaty barrel and picks up the most size, but also the most wind. Indies has hollow sections mixed with performance and cutback walls, while the final Valley section speeds up and hollows out again on lower tides.
On larger days it can occasionally break far enough out to link with Whale Bay and maybe even Manu, though linking the full 2 km is very unlikely.
When It Works
Indicators is consistent and works with swell from southwest to northwest, with southwest the optimal direction. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind is southeast. Low, mid and high tide can all have waves, and a rising tide is better.
Local Tips
This is the most competitive line-up at Raglan and is definitely for expert surfers only. It can get very busy.
Access
From Raglan, follow Main Road as it becomes Bow Street. At the first roundabout, turn left onto Bankart Street, then left again at the next roundabout onto Wainui Road. Continue past Manu Bay Reserve, turn right onto Calvert Road, then right onto Tohora Close.
Parking is limited around Tohora Close and can be very busy in summer, with free roadside parking available. A walkway at the end of Tohora Close leads past the houses and down to the beach at Whale Bay; from there, walk west around the shoreline to the next bay. Access is also possible by paddling from the lagoon or walking and jumping off the rocks. Restrooms are available.
