Rosapenna is a long, west-facing beach located in Ireland that really needs that NW swell to come alive. This spot is known to offer a fun session, but it can be a bit hit-or-miss depending on the conditions. It’s often referred to as Tra Beg and Tra More, giving you a couple of names to throw around when you’re chatting with other surfers. The beach tends to experience a strong drift running from north to south, which is something to keep in mind when you're out there.
The surf at Rosapenna is mostly beach breaks, making it accessible for surfers of various skills, including beginners. This spot functions best with swells coming from the Northwest and can handle wave sizes starting at about 0.6 meters (around 2 feet). You can catch waves breaking both left and right over the sandy bottom. If you’re planning to hit the waves, the wind from the east is preferable, and it works well at low, mid, or high tide. When the wind is offshore from the east, you might find some decent hollow sections, but it really depends on the swell and tide conditions.
Access to the beach is straightforward, with parking available in the area. Since it’s a long stretch of beach, there’s plenty of room to spread out, and you might find a less crowded spot if you wander a little further down. Just keep an eye on the conditions and adjust your time in the water as needed to make the most out of Rosapenna.
