26th Avenue Surf Forecast Guide

26th Avenue is a playful beachbreak on the east side of Santa Cruz, a stretch of shifting sandbars with a bit of rock reef mixed in for interest. It's a decent, fun wave rather than the crown jewel of town, and it offers a welcome change of pace from the more impacted point lineups nearby like Steamer Lane and Pleasure Point.

When It Works

The sandbars draw swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest (SW) the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, holding slightly overhead surf before it starts to close out on anything bigger. This is very much a small-to-medium-swell spot: too much energy and it shuts down. It stays fairly consistent and is at its best through autumn and winter, with clean west swells in the colder months.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. The break is tide sensitive and can work through low, mid, and high, but a rising tide is generally the better call. It's best on a low tide pushing back in, and it gets a bit swamped once the tide climbs too high.

Local Tips

This is an intermediate, shortboard-friendly wave, and in a town full of pointbreaks it's the rare chance to fly at a beachbreak. Expect a busy lineup when the peaks are popping, since it's no secret around Santa Cruz when 26th is good, though the atmosphere is friendly. Breaking relatively close to shore, the paddle-out is usually short. Keep in mind the cold water and shifting currents.

Access

Detour around the harbor and head for the coast. Street parking is limited, but you can park for free on the side streets that spill out onto the beach, with more parking at Moran Lake Park a couple of blocks north.
