Overview
2nd Beach (Sachuest Beach) is a sandy beachbreak in Middletown, close to Newport, with lefts and rights. It is also known as Sachuest Beach and is one of Rhode Islandโs more reliable summertime options, often with better-shaped and bigger peaks than 1st Beach on south swell.
At the eastern end, a protected left point called The Dumps can turn on when there is swell and an east wind.
When It Works
The spot breaks over sand and likes swell from southwest to southeast, with southwest as the optimal direction. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft.
Autumn and winter are the main seasons, with September through March noted as the strongest window. It is moderately consistent and can handle some size, especially on higher tides.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is north. North-northwest can also be useful.
Low, mid, and high tide can all work, with a rising tide generally better. Mid to high tide is often a good call when there is more size.
Local Tips
This is a beginner-friendly spot with room for shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, and bodyboards.
Crowds build in summer and fall, then ease in winter. The lineup is generally mellow, though it can feel a little reserved. Summer crowds are the main hazard, and red seaweed can make surfing unpleasant at times, with some jellyfish around in the summer surfing area.
Access
Access is generally good, with restrooms, showers, and lifeguards. Surf checks are easy from the road, and the walk from the parking areas is not long.
Parking is paid in summer and free in winter only. Summer access can be a hassle, with tourist traffic and parking hard to find on busy weekends.
