33rd St is a short-groin beach and jetty break on the Galveston seawall, sitting right in front of the Holiday Inn Express and the well-known local eatery, The Spot. It's an easy check on a drive down the seawall, though you can usually find better peaks elsewhere. Waves peel both left and right over a sand bottom, and it's a modest setup overall.
When It Works
The break draws swell from the east through south to south-southwest, and it's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft. Spring and autumn bring the most rideable days. Even when it's on, quality stays modest, so keep your expectations in check.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from west to north. It comes in best on mid to high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
The peak suits just about anyone, from beginners to experts, and takes anything from a shortboard or fish to a funboard or longboard. The lineup stays fairly quiet and can feel a little reserved, so finding your own peak is easy. Keep an eye on the strong currents near the jetty; when it's breaking outside the rocks, it can be tough to hold your position. Water quality is often poor here thanks to the nearby Houston shipping channel and runoff from Galveston.
