Overview
88 is a powerful left that peels over sand near a series of jetties in the Zhelang and Hong Hoi Wan area, generally the best bet around here. The jetties have shaped some excellent sand banks, with a left breaking off the northern jetty and clean A-frames setting up on the inside. There's history here too: the 2003 720 contest crowned Japan's Shinichi Yoshida as China's first surfing champion. One thing to know before you go is that the spot sits right next to a power plant and a new industrial zone, so pollution is a real problem.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from southwest through north to northeast (SW-N-NE), and it comes together best on a northeast swell. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, giving you a wide working window across small and solid days. Breaking over sand and rated as consistent, 88 picks up swell reliably and holds its shape more often than not.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west offshore wind. The jetties shelter the bank from sideshore north-northeast winds, and it's usually cleanest in the morning, making a dawn session the smart call. It works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better bet.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, with the left off the northern jetty and the inside A-frames offering a couple of options depending on where the sand is best. Expect a quiet lineup with few crowds around.
