Abalone Cove Beach surf guide

Abalone Cove Beach is located along the Palos Verdes Peninsula in California. It’s known for its beautiful scenery and rocky shoreline. Access to the beach is via a steep path from the dirt parking lot on Palos Verdes Drive South, which is a paid lot. The spot might not be the easiest to get to, but it’s worth checking out if you’re in the area.

The surf here has its moments, especially when the conditions are right. It's best to hit Abalone Cove when there are south swells or significant west swells. The waves typically break over the boulders and offer decent lefts, which can work well for intermediate surfers. It's suitable for swell sizes starting at about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and can handle waves up to around head high. For the best experience, try to surf during low to mid tides and when the wind is blowing from the north.

Keep in mind that this spot isn't the most consistent, so it’s a good idea to check the conditions before heading out. The combination of the rocky bottom and the wave type makes it a bit tricky, so make sure you’re comfortable with your skills. It might not be a top-tier surf destination, but it offers a unique experience that could be just what you’re looking for.
