Afulu is the northernmost spot on Nias, a left-hand reef break where clean lines run down the coral. The reef rose by up to 2.5 metres in the 2005 earthquake, and it now breaks shallow over dead, uncompromising coral.
When It Works
Afulu needs plenty of swell to get going. It draws from south through west (S-W), with southwest (SW) swell the best match, and is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Consistency is moderate, so expect worthwhile windows when the setup lines up rather than waves on demand.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-level wave, and the shallow coral bottom demands respect. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it's breaking.
Access
Getting here takes some effort: it's a 15-minute walk from the nearest village, a short boat ride from the Hinakos, or a long overland drive from Lagundri.
