Overview
Agua de Alto is a south-facing beachbreak with lefts and rights peeling over sand, and the usual second choice when nearby Populo gets busy. It shares the same generous swell window as its neighbor, though it doesn't quite match Populo in shape and size. Rips help shape the sandbars, and with lots of peaks along the beach there's plenty of room to find your own spot.
When It Works
This is a very consistent spot. It draws swell from west through north to northeast (W-N-NE) and even picks up northeast swells, but south (S) swell is the best match for the beach. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so there's a wide band of conditions where it's worth a look.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) wind to groom the waves offshore. The beach can work through the whole tide, from low to high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Agua de Alto is a good spot for beginners: the many peaks and roomy lineup make it easy to find space, and it's rarely crowded even when it's working.
Access
Treat it as the second option to Populo when that spot is packed. On the beach you'll find restrooms and a lifeguard, plus a car park with free parking.
