Ajo surf guide

Ajo is a northwest-facing beach that generally offers consistent surf conditions. It's a spot that can be pretty good when many other surf locations are too small. The beach is spacious, so you won’t feel cramped even when there are a few surfers around. There are facilities and areas for camping nearby, making it a decent place to hang out for a surf session.

The waves at Ajo are best with a northwest swell, but it can also handle some surf coming from the west or north. It works well with swell sizes starting at around 2 feet (0.6 meters). Both left and right beach breaks can be found here, and the conditions are usually best during low to mid tide. The southeast winds are preferred as they can help clean up the surf. Just keep in mind that it can get pretty wild in the winter, and the rip currents can be strong, making it more suitable for intermediate surfers.

In the warmer months, Ajo offers some shelter from the northeast sea breezes, which can make for more enjoyable sessions. If you’re looking for some variety, make sure to check out both Playa Cuberris and Antuerta around the same tide levels. Just be prepared for a bit of a scene, especially at Antuerta where you might come across nudists enjoying the sun.
