Overview
Amanave Bay is an archetypal South Pacific scenic bay that has been surfed, but not on any regular basis. Waves break as random close-out peaks over live coral, and it only really comes together when the swell angle, size and wind all line up, so scoring it is fairly rare.
When It Works
The bay draws swell from southeast through south to west (SE-S-W), with south the direction that suits it best. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, offering both lefts and rights when a peak stands up. Consistency is on the fickle side, so it can be inconsistent overall, but there are worthwhile windows when the setup lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind to clean up the faces. The bay works on mid to high water, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, largely because of the close-out peaks breaking over live coral. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it does break.
