Overview
Amoreira is a rivermouth break on an exposed beach, with the river running out under a headland at the southern end of the bay. It picks up plenty of swell, and shifting sand keeps the banks fickle, so it can be shifty one day and excellent the next. On a good day there's a left peeling out of the rivermouth toward the middle of the bay, while a sand-covered reef at the northern end throws rights. It breaks best when small and clean, and the water can get polluted after heavy rain. Strong rips and heavy currents are a constant here, so treat the paddle with respect.
When It Works
The break draws swell from southwest through north (SW-N), with southwest (SW) the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, holding anything from waist high to overhead. Consistency is only medium, but the window is long, running through autumn, winter, and spring, roughly September to May.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east (E) offshore wind. It works through the lower half of the tide, favouring rights at the lower stages, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Amoreira suits intermediate surfers, and the shifting banks reward a versatile quiver, whether you ride a shortboard, longboard, fish, or bodyboard. The lineup is usually fairly quiet and a touch reserved, with a chilled feel when it's on.
Access
There's a car park at the northern end with free parking, plus roadside spots nearby. You'll also find showers and a lifeguard on hand.
