Overview
Anakena is a sand-bottomed beach break on the north coast of Easter Island, offering up both lefts and rights. It sits on a striking piece of coast, with the Moai statues looking out over the lineup and Ovahe's pink-sand beach just along the shore. It's a mellow spot rather than a heavy one, and a decent place for beginners to pick off the occasional wave.
When It Works
The north coast comes to life on big northwest swells, which push waves onto Anakena and neighboring Ovahe alike. It draws swell from northwest through to northeast, with northwest the direction it likes best, and it's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Consistency is only moderate, so the good days tend to line up when a solid north swell arrives rather than showing up week in, week out.
Wind and Tide
Look for a south offshore wind to clean it up. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a forgiving, beginner-friendly wave, and the lineup usually stays fairly quiet when it's breaking.
