Overview
Androka is a coral reef break where a large fringing reef shapes up excellent bowling lefts that bend into the main channel, with wind-exposed rights on the other side. The wave breaks left over live coral, and the setup sits roughly 3 km (2 mi) offshore.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through southeast (SW-SE), with southwest swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and it is a consistent spot that shows up reliably when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind. The reef can work through most of the tide, from low to high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave that rewards surfers who are confident over live coral and comfortable sitting a good way from shore. The lineup stays fairly quiet, so you can usually expect an uncrowded session when it is on.
Access
Reaching the break means getting out by boat, and enlisting a fisherman's help is essential given that the waves sit about 3 km (2 mi) from shore. Plan for the trip to take plenty of time, especially if you end up relying on the sail.
