Anstey's surf guide

Anstey's is a surf spot located about 800 meters up the beach from Cave Rock, just past the lefts of Inbetweens. It tends to attract a mix of surfers looking to escape the busier town breaks. The spot has easy parking, making it a convenient option for both locals and visitors. However, it can get pretty crowded, especially when more surfers seek out the less critical peaks that hit the sand during small to medium swells.

Surfing at Anstey's offers fast, pumping right-hand barrels during the winter when the swell comes from the south. In the summer, you might find wedgy lefts with north-east swells. It works well for swell sizes around 3 feet (about 0.9 meters), but can handle bigger sets and starts to break a long way out the back when conditions are overhead. The preferred swell directions are southeast, northeast, and southwest, with the best winds coming from the northwest. It generally works at any tide, which is nice as you can enjoy a session whether itโ€™s low, mid, or high.

This spot is best suited for intermediate surfers, so keep that in mind if you're still learning the ropes. The waves break over a mix of uneven reef and sand, providing variety and interesting rides. If you're looking for a less critical option compared to the other hollow spots on the Bluff, Anstey's might be worth checking out, just be ready for the crowds.
