Brighton Beach surf guide

Brighton Beach is a well-known surf spot that attracts surfers looking for a decent ride. It’s pretty much a swell magnet, meaning it can pick up waves from multiple directions. The beach features a combination of sand and rocks which can affect how the waves break. While it can get busy, it’s a spot where both locals and visitors come to enjoy some time in the water when conditions are right.

The surf here is quite variable. Brighton Beach can handle swell sizes starting from about 2ft (0.6 meters) and is best with south swells. You’ll see waves coming in from the north-east and south-west as well. The spots break over uneven reef and sand, so it’s important to keep an eye on where you're surfing. You can find lefts, like the left off the pool, and rights, but be aware that it does have a tendency to close out, so you might not always get the perfect wave. It works well on low, mid, and high tides, and north-west winds are generally preferred for cleaner conditions. This spot is suitable for intermediate surfers who are comfortable navigating the sometimes heavy and choppy water.

If you’re planning to surf Brighton Beach, be prepared for a bit of a mixed bag. The waves can be powerful and fast, but keep in mind that it can get blown out easily, especially on windy days. Check your local forecast and be cautious about the conditions before heading out. It's a good idea to have some experience since the waves break hard and can be tricky.
