Overview
Aoshima is a left-hand reefbreak that peels off the island holding a beautiful Shinto temple. When a solid typhoon swell lines up, the wave can run long and stays fairly predictable, which makes it a quintessential Japanese surfing experience worth trying at least once.
When It Works
The reef comes alive on a solid east typhoon swell, drawing swell from northeast through southeast, with east the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. The break can be somewhat inconsistent, but when the setup lines up you get a long, dependable left. The Aoshima beachbreak is the less consistent option here compared with nearby Sosanji.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-level wave, and its predictable sections make it a magnet for longboarders happy to link turns for a few hundred metres. Expect a busy lineup when it works.
Access
Parking nearby covers a mix of options, including a car park, paid parking, and roadside spots.
