Overview
Arrecifes is a right-hand reef wave tucked into Parque Nacional Tayrona, where jungle-cloaked bays and inlets shelter a string of beaches. The best wave breaks off the huge granite boulders at the eastern end of the beach, peeling over a mix of rock ledge and sand, though it closes out often.
When It Works
The break draws swell from northwest through northeast (NW-NE), with northeast (NE) swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and it's moderately consistent, so you'll find worthwhile windows without it firing every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind. Unlike the nearby Barranquilla and Cartagena areas, Arrecifes isn't battered by constant wind. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. The long paddle and the power of the wave make it a tough spot for beginners. Expect a fairly quiet lineup, since easier, more accessible waves nearby pull most of the crowd away.
Access
Reaching the beach means an hour-long walk through the jungle, and you'll need to pay a fee to enter the park. Once there, you can camp or sling a hammock right by the beach, making it an easy place to settle in for a few days. Parking is restricted.
