Arue sits along Matavai Bay in French Polynesia, best known as Captain Cook's landing spot. The long curve of black volcanic sand is fairly poor for surf and prone to close-outs, but the bays to the west hold more of interest: a few reefbreaks like Taharaa, backed by plush hotels, and a shallow left further along at La Fayette, where a dumpy shorebreak suits bodyboards. Waves here break over a mix of uneven reef and sand and peel both left and right.
When It Works
Arue draws swell from northwest through northeast, with northwest swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and it's moderately consistent, picking up rideable swell fairly regularly rather than only on the odd day.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind to groom the faces. The break can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an approachable, beginner-friendly wave. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
