Avalon Pier Surf Forecast Guide

Avalon Pier is a sand-bottomed beachbreak on North Carolina's Northern Outer Banks that peels both left and right around the pilings. The south side is usually the pick, though the north side has produced its share of memorable days. It can flip overnight from a closed-out, wishy-washy mushburger to a sand-sucking run of barrels, yet through all of that it stays remarkably consistent, both consistently rideable and consistently packed.

When It Works

The break draws swell from north-northeast through east to southeast (NNE-E-SE) and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, holding size from head high to overhead and beyond. It's very much storm dependent, with autumn the standout season: late-summer and fall tropical cyclones do the heavy lifting, while frontal activity and nor'easters keep it going into late fall and winter. The south side stays fairly consistent, though the fabled north side has fallen off in recent years.

Wind and Tide

Look for west-southwest (WSW) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from southwest to west (SW-W). It can break on any tide depending on how the sand is sitting, so low, mid, and high all come into play, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a beachbreak that suits just about everyone, from beginners to experts, and takes anything from a shortboard or fish to a funboard or longboard. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, since it's probably the most crowded spot on the Northern Outer Banks when it's working. Paddling out is normally manageable, though the right south swell can make it tough to hold your position next to the pier.

Access

Parking takes some care. The pier owners sometimes flex control over the pier lot, and you should steer clear of the Avalon homeowners lot, the dirt one to the south, or you risk getting towed, especially in summer.
