Avalon Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Avalon is a sand-bottomed beach break on Sydney's northern beaches, and one of the area's most competitive line-ups. It's well exposed to both southeast and northeast swells, with two main peaks to choose from: loping lefts down the north end, and a separate quality peak near the pool that works in all swell directions up to double overhead.

When It Works

The bank draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with northeast swell the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft and is very consistent, so there's rarely a long flat spell. Expect both lefts and rights over sand. When a moderate-plus northeast swell fills in, the lefts start stomping down the north end and look picture perfect. Avalon handles some big faces and gets intense at size, with plenty of hollow sections on the good days.

Wind and Tide

Look for west offshore wind to clean it up. It works across low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call. Expect sharp drops at the lower tides.

Local Tips

Avalon suits intermediate surfers and is a hotbed for talented locals, so expect a busy, competitive line-up when it's firing. Watch for bluebottle jellyfish during summer northeast winds.

Access

There's a car park with free parking, plus paid and roadside options nearby. Facilities include restrooms, showers, a surf school, and a surf shop, and the beach is patrolled by lifeguards.
