Avenida is the beachbreak running along Avenida Soares Lopes, which parallels the sand right through town. It picks up all swells onto average banks, with the occasional hollow day when things line up. Lefts and rights both come through, and the north end tends to be bigger and quieter on southeast swells. The water sits too close to the bay to be clean, and rips and ever-changing sandbars are part of the deal.
When It Works
Swell arrives from northeast through east-southeast to south, and east swell is the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. The beach is consistent, so there is usually something to ride rather than a long wait between windows.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind. The banks can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The waves suit beginners, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup.
Access
There is a car park with free parking, plus paid, metered, and roadside options along the avenue. Restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard are on hand, and a surf school and surf shop are nearby.
