Overview
Avon Pier is a sand-bottom beachbreak with shifting peaks spread north and south of the pier. The sandbars move around frequently, running from outside banks near the end of the pier to close-to-the-beach grinders depending on how the sand stacks up. There are several promising breaks along this stretch, and when the sand lines up it can get genuinely good.
When It Works
The best waves come on northeast (NE) swell, though the spot pulls in anything from south to north (S-N). It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, offering both lefts and rights, with barrels on tap in NE swells when the banks cooperate. When the sand piles up out near the end of the pier it will handle the bigger swells too. It's a consistent break, and autumn is the standout season.
Wind and Tide
Offshore winds blow from the west (W), and this stretch tends to handle wind better than points further north. It works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a forgiving, beginner-friendly wave that suits just about any board, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. The lineup stays quiet with room to spread out, though it can feel a little reserved.

There's a car park with free parking, plus camping nearby if you want to make a longer trip of it.
