Back Door is a proper right-hand pointbreak sitting in front of the accommodation of the same name near Ilhéus. Waves barrel over a shelf of boulders and sand, then peel toward the beach around 300 metres away. If it's crowded, there are more sand and rock peaks to spread out on heading north.
When It Works
A consistent performer, Back Door draws swell from east through south, with southeast (SE) the best direction. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind. The point doesn't fall apart when the wind turns southeast either, holding its long, crumbling shoulders. It breaks through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
This is an approachable wave for intermediate surfers and a favourite with the Ilhéus crew. It's a regular contest venue, thanks to how reliable it is and how well it lets surfers link turns. Expect a busy lineup when it's on.
