Overview
Backdoor is a hollow right-hand reef break that comes to life mostly in summer. The wave runs over an uneven reef and packs some very hollow sections, so it demands respect even on the days it looks inviting.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from west through north (W-N), and north to northwest swells are the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, maxing out around double-overhead; beyond that it stops handling the size.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east offshore wind to groom the wave. Mid tide is the sweet part of the cycle, and a rising tide is generally the better call. Low tide is sketchy over the uneven reef, so time your session around the push.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. When it does turn on, expect plenty of company in the lineup, as it draws a crowd whenever it works.
