Overview
Baixa de Viola is a serious big-wave peak east of the town of Maia, breaking over an uneven offshore reef. Once it gets going, waves stand up with real power and purpose, then rumble along for a good distance, peeling both left and right.
When It Works
This wave needs genuine size before it breaks properly: it works from 3 m / 10 ft to 9.1 m / 30 ft. Swell from northwest through northeast gets it moving, with northwest (NW) the best match, and the reef makes the most of whatever arrives. That demanding size range keeps consistency at a medium level, so expect worthwhile windows rather than day-in, day-out surf.
Wind and Tide
The peak sits very exposed to the wind, so a south offshore is what you want. It can break through the whole tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is expert territory: bring a big board and the experience to match. The lineup is always empty, but with big rocks and rip currents in play this is not a place to surf alone. On smaller swells there's a hollow wedge just out in front of Maia.
Access
A new concrete road runs to the spot east of Maia and ends at a car park with free parking; roadside parking works too.
