Ballydavid is a deep-water, big-wave right that breaks over an uneven reef. It is an inconsistent spot that stays flat on small days and only comes to life when the swell is big. To find the peak, line up with the masts and the old coastguard lookout.
When It Works
Ballydavid needs a large swell out of the northwest or north to break at all. It draws swell from northwest to north (NW-N), with a north (N) swell the best match. The working range runs from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 6.1 m / 20 ft, and it reputedly gets better the bigger it gets.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. The take-off is dicey, the drop is steep, and the wall is fast, so it rewards surfers who are comfortable in serious size. When it gets big, expect long hold-downs and strong currents.
