Overview
Banyans is one of the most popular breaks on the Kona side of Hawaii's Big Island, a year-round A-frame reef sitting right in the heart of Kailua-Kona. It has real range: the right stands up and holds its line, serving clean turn sections and even a decent barrel before emptying into deeper water, while the left can throw a wide-open barrel off the takeoff and then close out over shallower reef. Its central location and versatility make it a genuine local favourite.
When It Works
Banyans draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest (SW) the best match. Summer S to SW swells march straight in, while the more westerly NW and WNW winter swells still deliver a fair share of energy, so the break turns on across every season. It is a consistent spot, most reliable through summer but capable of solid days in winter on the bigger WNW events. The wave works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, holding its shape from head high up to well overhead.
Wind and Tide
Mornings are the call here. A typical diurnal wind pattern brings light wind and clean conditions early, before an afternoon seabreeze fills in. Look for offshore wind from the northeast (NE); a north wind blows side-offshore. The reef breaks across low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is generally the better bet, and low tide leaves the water thin over the reef.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave, and the lineup stays busy whenever there is surf chest high or above. Expect a crowd of strong surfers with a friendly but competitive feel, so patience and respect go a long way. It suits everything from shortboards to funboards, longboards, and bodyboards.
Access
Banyans is easy to find, right off the main road in front of the Kona Bali Kai condos and the namesake banyan tree. There is free roadside parking nearby. Watch for the uneven reef and urchins.
