Overview
Barra de Cuanza is a right-hand reef break tucked beneath multi-coloured cliffs south of the river, and it holds the rare distinction of being the only right in Angola. The wave breaks over a mix of rock ledge and sand.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south to southwest (S-SW) and is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. It's moderately consistent, so count on worthwhile windows when the setup lines up rather than surf every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The wave suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup stays fairly quiet when it's on.
Access
Getting here is tough, and several of the spots south of the river are hardly ever ridden as a result. There's paid parking nearby. Don't paddle across the river, as sharks and crocodiles are a genuine concern, and be aware of the military installation close by.
