Overview
Barra de Guaratiba is a river mouth left that breaks over sand and, on the right day, ranks among the best waves in Rio. When the cylindrical walls spin down the triangulated sandbar, it throws fast, throaty barrels. Crowds, localism and pollution take a heavy toll on the experience, and sharks are regularly spotted near the river mouth.
When It Works
The sandbar likes south swell best, though it will draw anything through the southeast to south window. It is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. The wave is somewhat inconsistent, so it rewards patience and a bit of timing to catch it on.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind to groom it. The sandbar breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave, and it gets no easier when it turns on. Expect a very busy lineup on the days it delivers.
Access
Parking is straightforward, with a car park offering free spaces plus paid and roadside options nearby. The 40 km beach to the west is military land, and soldiers will chase, arrest and harass anyone walking on it, though paddling or SUPing across is tolerated.
