Barra de la Gabina is a river-mouth break near the border with El Salvador, one of several secluded beaches in this stretch worth a look. The rivermouth gives the best odds of stacking up stable sandbars, and it breaks over sand with both lefts and rights on offer. It sits a decent walk up the beach from town.
When It Works
The break draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southwest the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. As a sandbar-dependent rivermouth it's only moderately consistent, so it's worth timing your session for when the banks and swell line up.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The wave suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup usually stays fairly quiet. Keep an eye out for dirty run-off after rain, and watch for swirling rips on the drop.
