Monterrico is a laid-back tourist town known for its unique black sand beaches, thatched roof houses, and stunning volcanic backdrops. The area offers a chill vibe, but when it comes to surfing, it might not be the most glamorous spot. While the scenery is beautiful, the surf can be basic, primarily featuring shoredump close-outs that are usually more suitable for bodyboarders than traditional surfers.

The surf here works best with swells coming from the South, Southeast, or Southwest and can handle sizes starting from around 2ft (0.6 meters). Waves typically break over sandbanks and come in both left and right directions. It's important to note that the best conditions tend to be with low to mid tide and even high tide. For intermediate surfers, the wave action can be fun but might not provide the best thrill, especially with the tendency for close-outs. Additionally, the most favorable wind direction is from the Northeast.

Due to the nature of the waves, keep an eye out for rips during dropping tides since the crowds can be sparse. This gives you some space to maneuver, but it also means you need to be a bit cautious. Overall, if you’re in the Monterrico area, it's a decent spot to catch some waves, but don't set your expectations too high.
