Barra is a long, west-facing beachbreak on the Outer Hebrides, sitting across the dunes from the island's famous beach airport. The waves break over sand and peel both left and right, and there are a few more west coast beaches worth checking further south around Borgh.
When It Works
Barra draws swell from anywhere between southwest and north, but it comes into its own on a northwest (NW) swell. Being a beachbreak, it offers plenty of peaks with both lefts and rights on offer. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so there is a decent window from small clean days up to more solid surf. Expect moderately consistent conditions, with worthwhile sessions when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind to clean things up. The beach can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The mellow, sandy peaks make this a friendly spot for beginners finding their feet. The lineup tends to stay quiet, so you will often have space to yourself.
