Overview
Batu Layar is a right-hand reef break on the east side of the peninsula. Its name translates to "Sail Rock," after the triangular landmark near the reef, and the wave breaks over dead coral.
When It Works
It draws swell from southwest through southeast, with a southeast swell the best match, and it needs a solid, head-high south swell before it really shows. The working range runs from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Consistency is on the patchy side, so it takes the right pulse to line up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west wind, which cleans it up through the wet season. Mid tide is the pick, with a rising tide generally the better call. Lower tides run faster, while the wave tends to get fat and sluggish at high.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave, and the lineup usually stays fairly quiet when it's working.
