Beacons is a dependable, working person's reef break tucked in among higher-profile North San Diego County spots like Swamis and Cardiff Reef. It breaks over a flat rock reef dotted with sand and sea grass, one of the more mellow reef setups in this wave-rich stretch of coast. When it's small it stays soft and forgiving, but as the swell fills in the wave shifts further out on the reef and serves up quality lefts and rights, so there's something here for just about everyone.
When It Works
Beacons pulls in swell from south through west-southwest to west-northwest (S-WSW-WNW), and it comes alive on a solid west or northwest swell. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, with chest-high to slightly overhead the magic size. The spot picks up swell year-round and has a knack for grabbing local windswell, making it a viable call when there isn't enough long-period energy for Swamis and Cardiff. Autumn is the standout season, when early-season west swells line up with offshore Santa Ana winds, though it can also be fun through winter and summer.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore wind from the east-northeast (ENE), with a workable window running from northeast to east (NE-E). It works best on low and mid tide, and a rising tide, low going high, is the ideal window.

With everything from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards in the water, Beacons suits beginners, intermediates, and experts alike. Expect a busy lineup whenever it's on, with a steady mix of newcomers and seasoned regulars. The atmosphere is generally neutral and it's not an aggro zone, but you should know what you're doing before you paddle out.
Access
Park in the main lot off Neptune Ave. or along the street, then walk the path down to the beach. Nearby San Elijo State Beach is a handy option too.
