Bean Hollow State Beach surf guide

Bean Hollow State Beach is a laid-back surf spot located along California's central coast. It’s got a little pocket cove that's tucked away and surrounded by cliffs, making it feel somewhat secluded. You can find free parking and restrooms nearby, so it's easy to spend a day here. Just keep in mind that this area is part of the Red Triangle, which is known for its marine life.

The surf here mainly offers short but fun lefts that break off the south end of the beach. You might catch a few rights off the rockpile to the north, but they're not as common. It’s best to hit this spot when the swell direction is coming from the west, but south and north swells can work too. The waves can handle sizes around 3 feet (about 1 meter), breaking over both boulders and sand. The optimal conditions are during mid tide, especially with an east wind, so timing your visit can make a difference. This spot is more suited for intermediate surfers, so be prepared to ride some manageable waves.

While you'll find that Bean Hollow isn’t surfed all that often, it's definitely worth checking out, especially on a day with some windswell. Just be ready for a quiet session where you can enjoy the natural beauty of the coastline.
