Bells Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Bells Beach is Victoria's most famous surf spot, a classic and consistent right-hand point that breaks over a rock ledge. The wave runs long and comes in three sections, starting outside at Rincon, leading into Bell's Bowl, and finishing in the beach shorebreak, and in huge swells those sections can link up into one long ride. Power is the defining trait here: get caught by an outside set and you are in for a flogging and a gruelling paddle back out, especially once it grows beyond double overhead. As the home of the longest-running surf competition of the modern era and a testing ground for the big brands, Bells is a genuine pilgrimage site, and it is also the world's first Surfing and Coastal Reserve, with the wave protected in law.

When It Works

Bells draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southwest (SW) swell the best match, and it wraps in beautifully on a good SW pulse. It is a consistent break that handles almost any decent swell and works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft. When it is small, the wave turns playful and ripable, offering endless carve and cutback corners along a lengthy platform reef, though that same reef throws up some long, unmakeable sections. When it is big, expect serious power and size.

Wind and Tide

Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to groom it at its best, ideally paired with a wrapping SW swell. It is a forgiving spot for wind, so you will still find takers even in ugly onshore conditions. The point breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an expert-level wave, and the crowd matches the reputation, so expect a very busy lineup when it is on. If the pack is too much, the headland to the south holds alternatives: Centreside offers more rights that are lower quality but less intimidating than Bell's, while Southside picks up some genuinely good lefts in SE swells on higher tides.

Access

There is a car park with free parking, plus restrooms, showers, a surf school, and a surf shop nearby.
