Belt Road is a left-hand reef tucked in behind the harbour, reached from New Plymouth. The waves break over a mix of uneven reef and sand, and it holds up as a decent spot when the swell lines up. Sharp rocks are part of the deal here, so pick your moments and your entry with care.
When It Works
Belt Road really comes alive on sizeable southwest to west swells, when the left can show its true tube colours. On smaller or off-angle days it tends to go a bit lazy and sectiony. It draws swell from southwest to northwest (SW-NW), with southwest the best match. The wave is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and it stays moderately consistent through the seasons.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore wind out of the south to clean things up. The reef works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers who are comfortable over reef. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it turns on, since the good days tend to draw a crowd. Keep the sharp rocks in mind while you sort out your positioning.
Access
From the New Plymouth city centre, head southwest on Devon Street West, also known as the Surf Highway or State Highway 45, then turn right onto Belt Road and follow it down to the beach, where there is a car park.
