Overview
Bentota is a sand-bottomed beach break, best known for the A-frame peaks that break near the package holiday resort it shares a name with. It sits along the run of beaches north of Hikkaduwa and draws more tourists than surfers. The banks throw up both lefts and rights.
When It Works
The peaks pick up swell from the south through west, with a southwest swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.2 m / 4 ft, and the waves tend to be consistent, so your odds of finding something rideable are good.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east offshore wind to clean up the faces. The bank breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The waves suit intermediate surfers, and you can expect a quiet lineup when it's working.
