Overview
Bergen Aan Zee is a typical Dutch beachbreak just north of town, breaking over sand with both lefts and rights on offer. It shares its character with neighbouring Egmond Aan Zee: an open, featureless beach that lacks much shape or power, so treat it as an easygoing session rather than a punchy wave.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from southwest to north (SW-N), with northwest (NW) swell the best match, so it pays to wait for a NW pulse to bring in the cleanest surf. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and is moderately consistent, so there are regular windows to get wet.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to groom the faces, and a spell of slack wind is a bonus since it helps keep the kiteboarders off the water. The beach can work through low, mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a forgiving spot that suits beginners, and the lineup tends to stay fairly quiet, though the local crew is slowly growing.
Access
You will find the break north of town, with restrooms, showers and a lifeguard close by. A large car park offers free parking, but expect it to fill with tourists through the summer months.
